Celebrating 40 years
Success Story

Stephanie is our participant of the month because of her courage and “never give up attitude”. Stephanie had been placed in her first job at Wal-Mart in November but due to the economy her hours were cut until she was laid off before the holidays. Stephanie kept in contact with her manager which showed her motivation to return to work and her positive attitude. The training program she attend while at Goodwill®  had taught her to be positive, keep in contact, show her motivation and stand out as always giving the job her best. Stephanie was called back to work early January for 2 days a week to start. By working hard and having a positive attitude, Stephanie is now up to 3 days and is pushing for 4. Working with Stephanie has always been a joy especially when she stops, smiles, and then gives you her “two thumbs up” sign. Stephanie is more independent, takes pride in her job and meets everyday with a positive attitude.

Dan Kurtenbach, President/CEO
Goodwill® Industries of Monocacy Valley, Inc.

Dan has 35 years of management experience, serving for six years with the State of Nebraska and 29 years as President/CEO of 4 Goodwills.  During his fourteen years in Oklahoma City, Dan brought the organization from serving 30 people per day to nearly 400 per day.  He increased the revenues from $860,000 annually to nearly $13,000,000.

While serving as the President/CEO of the Oklahoma Goodwill®  Industries in Oklahoma City, Dan was asked to chair an unmet needs committee following the April 19, 1995 A.P. Murrah building bombing which killed 168 people and injured over 500.  After meeting weekly for three years and biweekly for two years, the committee members distributed nearly $3,000,000 and numerous other resources to serve victims of the shocking disaster.

On May 3, 1999 central Oklahoma was devastated by nearly 30 tornadoes, which resulted in 47 deaths and massive destruction.  Within hours of the first touchdown of the tornadoes, Dan was asked to chair a resource committee to respond to survivors' needs.  After meeting for nine months, the committee dispensed $1,000,000 and significant other resources to these victims.

The second child in a family of eleven children, Dan was raised on a farm in central Nebraska.  After graduating, cum laude, with a B.S. degree in Business Administration from St. John’s University in New York, Dan and his Brooklyn-born wife, Theresa, and their first child, Dan II, moved to Nebraska to begin his management career.  While working for the State of Nebraska, Dan received his MBA from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  Theresa and Dan had a second son, Jerome, who is a music composer in Los Angeles.  Their older married son is a teacher/coach and is married to Tina and has presented Nona (grandma in Italian) and Opa (grandpa in German) with two grandchildren, Dan III and Joshua.

Dan has written a biography of his life growing up in Nebraska and meeting Theresa, which is entitled “Never Far from the Farm” which was published in 2008.  Dan is an avid Nebraska Huskers fan and enjoys dancing with his wife, golfing and being Opa.
