Success Story
Dusti came to Goodwill®  through a referral from DORS in early 2007. She had been unemployed for over a year and was struggling with a situation that left her unemployed, insecure and non-trusting. The situation also intensified the disabilities she had been struggling with and it took her very supportive grandmother to encourage her to come to Goodwill®  for a meeting to discuss our programs options. At the meeting the grandmother did most of the talking and Dusti seemed as if there was a wall in front of her. We discussed Dusti participating in a transitional position available in our Goodwill® retail store so she would be in a supervised safe employment environment. While Dusti was in our 90 day training position she began to feel secure and trust those around her. As Dusti’s self-esteem and confidence grew, Retail Management was so impressed the Store Manager offered her a full-time Cashier position. During Dusti’s training and employment at Goodwill®, staff watched an insecure young girl turn into a dependable, stable employee with enough confidence in herself to start pursuing a position out in the community. Her life’s dream was to work with animals and she felt secure and ready for this challenge. With determination, hard work and reaching for her dreams Dusti became employed at Pet Smart as a Pet Care Specialist in September of 2008.
